FB Chain Sample Test Certificate

All replacement forklift truck chains should be supplied with a chain test certificate. Each certificate must give the chain’s minimum breaking load and proof load to show that the chain has undergone a safety test to demonstrate that the chain is able to support a minimum of one and a half times the safe working load. The majority of forklift manufacturers and maintenance firms place a lot of emphasis on receiving these test certificates but will file them away without looking at them.

The various different types of forklift truck chain have been consolidated over the past decade with the result that when ordering leaf chain, many firms simply ask for the generic part number from the International Leaf Chain Standard ISO4347 e.g. BL634. However, this standard only refers to the dimensions of the leaf chain elements and the minimum tensile strength.

If you only quote the generic part number when ordering your leaf chain and do not check the breaking load of the leaf chain you purchase, you will not necessarily receive the correct product quality or consistency for your particular application.

It is important to check that the safe working load stated on the certificate exceeds the capacity of the lifting equipment. 70% of the forklift truck manufacturers we supply require leaf chain with a greater minimum tensile strength than the International Standard ISO4347.

The properties of FB leaf chain have been developed over a number of years to ensure the optimum balance between strength, wear rate, fatigue life and resistance to shock loading. FB leaf chains have consistently higher breaking loads than the International Standard ISO4347 and are typically 20-30% stronger.

The safe working load of a leaf chain will usually be shown on the test certificate in kilonewtons (kN). If the capacity of your equipment is given in kilograms or pounds you will need to refer to the safe working load conversion table available to download.

It is also important to ensure that the safety legislation quoted on your test certificate is reliable and up to date. FB Chain Test Certificates refer only to the current requirements of The Machinery Directive, LOLER and PUWER.  FB Chain Leaf Chain Test Certificates are also supported by the BITA, FLTA and NQA.

Each batch of FB leaf chain is numbered and from the details given on the test certificate and on the brass plates on the chain itself, each chain can be traced back through the manufacturing process to the raw material. Without this vital information it is impossible to know if the information on a test certificate covers the exact length of leaf chain you are buying.

The FB Chain Test Certificates are the most comprehensive leaf chain test certificates in the industry and ensure greater compliance to manufacturing procedures and quality standards. FB Chain are, therefore, not only able to supply you with leaf chain but also with the peace of mind that this safety critical item demands.
